This Roman fort was built to guard the major supply road from the harbour at Ravenglass to Ambleside.
The fort looks down on the Brother Ickeld valley. Walk up, along the river valley, for an amazing view of the south face crags and cliffs of the Scafell range towering above you.
The fort is dramatically sited half-way up the famous Hardknott Pass, a stunning twisting, turning fell road which proves a challenging drive - but well worth the effort!
